A couple of weeks have passed since my first blog about my parents sweet little Fred the Shih Tzu Puppy. Yesterday, I went home to Wales and finally met him. I am pleased to report that after taking my advice, Fred is sleeping through the night already however, my parents have found his sleeping silence a worry so get up in the middle of the night to check on him!!! So, Fred and I are a long way off training my folks.
I thought I’d introduce Clicker Training to my Mum and Fred while I was there. Fred took to it very well, as all pups do ;-) and to be fair, my mother did too (eventually). We started with just the basics of showing him (and Mum) how the clicker works. I explained the ‘one second rule’ of the clicker - as soon as you see what you want CLICK IT! Then follow with a tasty morsel of food, in this case a tiny piece of mild cheddar cheese. My 94 year old Grandmother was watching and asking my sister what we were doing, she didn’t have her hearing aids in and wondered “Can you “Litter Train” a puppy?” :-)
Once the clicker was successfully introduced we then moved onto a nice gentle sit. Fred got this straight away, my Mother was very impressed with how gentle and straight forward it was. Dad popped into the kitchen and had a little go as he has never seen a Clicker (or his daughter) in action before, and with high expectations coupled with an old school attitude to training dogs, I thought I had a challenge on my hands but no, he enjoyed it and liked the calmness of it all. I was so happy for them. I’m even sure I heard Dad say to my Mum “Well, we have to listen to her, it’s her job!”
I’ve left them with a few little things to be getting on with and now I’ve shown them I can talk it through with them on Skype.
